PRP for Hair Loss

For both men and women, the topic of pattern hair loss (Androgenic Alopecia) is one that can be stigmatizing, upsetting, and embarrassing.  Both are genetic problems that can leave one feeling helpless.  While many options for hair loss exist to help with the balding such as prescription drugs, topical therapies, light therapies, and vitamins, they are often only partially effective, and other available therapies carry the potential for unwanted side effects.  Surgical hair restoration can be expensive and—while effective—does not treat potential underlying medical problems.

With platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP), there is now an affordable way for you to improve hair density without surgery or other harmful side effects. PRP therapy for hair restoration involves a simple injection of your own platelet-rich plasma into your scalp to help regrow hair naturally.

  • Increases blood supply to the follicle
  • Increases thickness of the hair shaft
  • Triggers and maintains the hair growth phase
  • Decreases further hair loss

Platelets contain healing growth factors and are responsible for construction of new connective tissue and revascularization. These growth factors, when released, instruct your tissues to regenerate and multiply. The benefits of utilizing one’s own growth factors in treatments has led different fields of medicine to utilize PRP for wound healing to speed up recovery time and regrow healthier, stronger tissues.

As with most medical advancements, pioneers in various fields have discovered that what worked for severe medical cases (like injuries) can also be used for less severe medical cases—such as pattern baldness. Dermatologists have discovered how PRP therapy’s innovative technique can be applied to those suffering from pattern baldness.

With PRP therapy, your own growth factors and stem cells are used to reverse the miniaturization of the hair follicle and jump start dormant hair follicles back into the growth stage, resulting in the thickening and regrowth of your hair. A quick series of injections spaced 1 month apart will involve the collection and concentration of your body’s own platelets using a very easy three-step process.

Am I a good candidate for platelet-rich plasma therapy?

While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, Dr. Kolansky will help you sort out your options. Visit us for a consultation to determine a proper hair loss diagnosis and treatment plan. Depending on other medical conditions, PRP may not be the right choice for you.

How many PRP treatments are required?

Treatments vary based on need, but typically we recommend 4 treatments spaced 1 month apart as initial therapy. After the initial treatment, maintenance treatments 2-4 times per year is suggested.

Is PRP for hair restoration a time-consuming process?

Not at all! The collection of your body’s platelet-rich plasma typically takes 10-15 minutes. The PRP injection treatments themselves usually takes as little as 3–5 minutes.

Do the PRP injections hurt?

As with other cosmetic injections, there may be some sensitivity and a sense of fullness in the area receiving the injection. However, anesthetic solutions, such as cold ambient air or a topical analgesic, may be suggested to minimize any potential discomfort.

What is the recovery time?

At worst, it is advised to avoid using any harsh dyes or chemicals on your hair for 48 hours, however there is no lengthy recovery process with PRP therapy—no need to cancel your plans!  However, you may take a warm shower the evening of the treatment.

Is PRP therapy a cure for baldness?

Unfortunately, platelet-rich plasma therapy is not a cure for baldness (Androgenic Alopecia).  Since it’s a genetic issue at its’ core, the problem will remain for life.  However, there is evidence that treatments maintained regularly can significantly slow down the effects of Androgenic Alopecia, as the procedure works to increase hair density.
