With platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP), there is now an affordable way for you to improve hair density without surgery or other harmful side effects. PRP therapy for hair restoration involves a simple injection of your own platelet-rich plasma into your scalp to help regrow hair naturally.
As with most medical advancements, pioneers in various fields have discovered that what worked for severe medical cases (like injuries) can also be used for less severe medical cases—such as pattern baldness. Dermatologists have discovered how PRP therapy’s innovative technique can be applied to those suffering from pattern baldness.
With PRP therapy, your own growth factors and stem cells are used to reverse the miniaturization of the hair follicle and jump start dormant hair follicles back into the growth stage, resulting in the thickening and regrowth of your hair. A quick series of injections spaced 1 month apart will involve the collection and concentration of your body’s own platelets using a very easy three-step process.
While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, Dr. Kolansky will help you sort out your options. Visit us for a consultation to determine a proper hair loss diagnosis and treatment plan. Depending on other medical conditions, PRP may not be the right choice for you.
Treatments vary based on need, but typically we recommend 4 treatments spaced 1 month apart as initial therapy. After the initial treatment, maintenance treatments 2-4 times per year is suggested.
Not at all! The collection of your body’s platelet-rich plasma typically takes 10-15 minutes. The PRP injection treatments themselves usually takes as little as 3–5 minutes.
As with other cosmetic injections, there may be some sensitivity and a sense of fullness in the area receiving the injection. However, anesthetic solutions, such as cold ambient air or a topical analgesic, may be suggested to minimize any potential discomfort.
At worst, it is advised to avoid using any harsh dyes or chemicals on your hair for 48 hours, however there is no lengthy recovery process with PRP therapy—no need to cancel your plans! However, you may take a warm shower the evening of the treatment.
Unfortunately, platelet-rich plasma therapy is not a cure for baldness (Androgenic Alopecia). Since it’s a genetic issue at its’ core, the problem will remain for life. However, there is evidence that treatments maintained regularly can significantly slow down the effects of Androgenic Alopecia, as the procedure works to increase hair density.
NOTE: While most patients experience positive results, not all results are identical and not all patients experience the same results.
